MEET THE ARTIST
I have been drawing all my life. I earned a fine art degree from Montgomery College, went to work for the Montgomery County Arts Council and through an unexpected set of circumstances, became a bookkeeper and went on to study accounting, which has been my profession for the last 30 years. I never stopped drawing though.
I’ve lived in Frederick since 1985 when my husband, Tom Peperone, opened Wheel Base Bicycle Shop on Market Street. The Frederick art community has been a big inspiration. We have so much talent in this town.
I am a long standing member of the Frederick Figure Drawing group that meets at the
NOMA Gallery. I’ve taken wonderful classes and workshops and participated in exhibits at the Delaplaine Arts Center. And I’ve been privileged to draw portraits of many Frederick residents, their dogs, their children, and their loved ones.
the process
I like to work from sketches and photos that I have taken myself. I can control the pose, light and shadow and capture a moment of quiet calm. This gives a timeless quality to each portrait.
I begin by making some quick drawings so I can study and learn the sitter’s face. Then I take a lot of photos and choose the best image. Working on charcoal paper I map in the contours of the face for an accurate likeness, then slowly build up the values and highlights in black and white or color pencils. I mat the completed portrait on archival quality board.
